Ok, I was wondering what sort of .cab files that I need to transfer from my computer onto a disk so that I can have the windows emulator work properly, I'm getting Ubuntu. (mainly because it's free) And also because I really need Linux right now, also they offer to ship the CD to me. So what sort of .cab files should I transfer?

Are the files already on the main hardrive?

You don't need to transfer any .cab files. And just to let you know Ubuntu sucks, check out Mandriva or Susie.

And to solve your emulator problem google WINE.

well an emulator is slow. And oh really are those others also free. Plus do they give you the option to order a free CD?

P.S.

Untubu also offers a 3 year Security service plan. For free!

Download and burn the cd yourself.

And WINE is not an emulator.

And all Linux is free. It is an open source NOS based of Unix.

Go to your local library, and I'm sorry about your dial up. I know the pain.

lol nope. Be carefull when you install it on your HDD, Linux tolerates windows. But does not like it. It is best to use two HDD. One for windows and the other for Linux. Keep in mind windows can not see a Linux partition. With that said Linux can see a windows partition. Networking also becomes a problem. You will need to activate smb in order for windows machines to see your Linux machine.

Don't think this is cake. If you don't know what you are doing you will screw something up and can make your HDD a door stop.

My suggestion if you don't know what TCP/IP is or what DHCP is then do not use Linux.

Ok, I was planning on getting Linux and then removing Windows from my HDD. I then would also get wine so that I could run my microsoft programs.

Ok. When you do that make sure you pay close attentions to the partitions. If you ever want to go back to windows you don't want to make it difficult on yourself.

Ok now when I install Linux on my Laptop (that's the reason why I'm unistalling Windows), Wine, will it all make me feel happy. Ok using the WINE on linux question.

after I remove windows, would I be able to load the files from HDD?

If not how would I do the files. Reinstall but this time using Linux. Maybe?

P.S.

thanks for your help thus far.

If you mean files such as .doc files or .8xp files. Save them to a flash drive.

One does not need to know what "TCP/IP" and "DHCP" are in order to use Linux. Nor can you easily make your harddrive a "doorstop." At the worst you can lose all of your data if you improperly format it, that's it...

its a great time investment
i wouldnt suggest emailing yourself things 40 megs above because then it just freezes.
find a time when youre doing something else and then email yourself one thing at a time while doing that other thing

Well like I said in the other thread I'm going to use my Zune. But which Linux is best? I've heard that it's a toss up between Ubuntu, Madrivia, and Redhat.

No I actually use it for music, video and such. The backup hardrive thing is just for right now because I'm reformatting my computer today. So I had to use it. My current bg is a picture of master chief, and the arbiter. Then the sun is coming out from behind them. Plus Hydra if I was going to just use it for a portable hard drive, why wouldn't I have just went out and bought a 500 gig one. It costs alot less. I was just saying that that's one of the benifits of having the Zune. Also I've used a stripper. (If u think that that last statement was naughty, plz consult someone who nows about computers.) Plus I changed the reg files on it. Yay reg files.

But back on topic.

Which Linux should I get?

I don't want to have to pay for redhat, so I'm open to suggestions.

Honestly, people say Ubuntu sucks. But really, it is prolly one of the best distros to use if Linux is new to you. Just dl the iso, burn it to a CD, pop it in your drive, and VOILÀ, the magic of a LiveCD is presented to you. Clicky "Install" on the desktop, follow the nice easy to use graphical fun steps, voilà, you're done. Just be warned that a backup is important, and don't bother with dual booting, just format the whole drive.

As for emulators, WINE will do fine. Unless you want to run some hardcore games, as long as your system doesn't suck too bad, it'll be absolutely fine. Hell, I run Worms2 through WINE on Ubuntu on a 300MHz Celeron, with 128MB of RAM. Oh, and it runs at nearly full speed. So no worries. Srsly.
