Sunday's News Roundup: Making a MESS of EmulationJayhawk
While scouring the web for newsworthy articles, I stumbled upon MESS. It is the Multiple Emulator Super System and is an emulator of TI calculators along with many other systems. This emulator is currently at v0.90 and in my testing worked quite well. This emulator, like vti, is based off the MAME emulation core. Unlike vti, however, MESS runs on Mac OS and *nix in addition to Windows. You can click here to view a screenshot of the TI-85 emulation in MESS.

In other news, Robot War Demo v3.0.0 has been released by Brady Mayes for the TI-82. It's a rather entertaining RPG with many features including a two player mode. While this program is not in our archives, you may visit its information page over at ticalc.org.

Yesterday, ticalc.org featured WordRider 0.54, which is an editor for the PC which produces documents for later viewing using TxtRider on a TI-89 or TI-92 Plus. WordRider is written by Ladislav Vitasek and is released under the GPL license. You can find information pages for WordRider and TxtRider at ticalc.org.

Currently, the mecca for nerds known as Slashdot is featuring a HOWTO on overclocking TI calculators. The HOWTO was written by Richard Piotter and gives detailed instructions on overclocking several calculators and adding a switch to disable overclocking when necessary. This overclocking website has been around for awhile, but the information is still useful for anyone who wishes to decrease battery life and risk damaging their calculator for faster enemies in games or to solve complex math problems in half the time.

Finally, our CalcGames.org newsletter for February, which will be released at the beginning of February, is finally starting to take shape. We're still looking for user-submitted articles, opinions, and reviews of software. The deadline for submitting material is January 25. If you have a suggestion for the newsletter, questions, or content to submit, please write to redux@calcgames.org and indicate you're writing about the newsletter.

Never mind; a TI-85 emulator is not very good! :(

Re: Sunday's News Roundup: Making a MESS of EmulationJayhawk
At this time, it appears the TI-81, TI-85, and TI-86 are supported. Judging by the header file, though, it looks like they plan to support other calculators as well. Right now, doing development on a *nix machine is a pain, because of the lack of a good emulator. There's been other projects as well, such as GnuTI, but unfortunately those seem to have fallen apart. GnuTI was a project I actually had some involvement in, but nobody seemed to be motivated to actually get much work done. It's a shame because the project had a lot of promise. Anyways, the MESS emulator seems to be under constant development, so chances are more calculators will be supported in the future. Just looking at the source, there already seem to be plans for 82, 83, 83+, 89, 92, and 92+ support.

Though, it'd be pretty hard to beat Boycott Advance and VisualBoyAdvance. Anyway, nice emulator and having one emulator for many different platforms is a very good idea.
