UNIX for the TI-92 Plus and a z80 CompilerJayhawk
Calculator nerds have dreamed for years over porting Linux to their calculators. It's been the subject of April Fools jokes and countless message board posts. And while this isn't quite Linux, it's close. Chris Williams announced Puny Unix (Punix) over at ti-news.net. The program is available, along with a screenshot, from the program's project page at ti-news.net. While the author stresses in his post at ti-news.net that it's merely an early version of such an OS, it's a very promising project. He is seeking help developing it, so if you're interested, send him an e-mail and let him know.

In another post at ti-news.net, a user known as shkaboinka has announced a project called Disassemblage. It's a compiler which produces z80 assembly as output and has features of many high level languages such as object oriented programming. A group at Yahoo has been created for discussing and developing the project. The author states the project is nearly complete but is requesting some assistance from the community. As always, if you are able to help, please e-mail him and offer your services.

And while this isn't quite Linux, it's close.

Will it require a $699 licensing fee?

As far as I know, both are legit. They're posted over at ti-news.net, which isn't known for posting fake stuff. For what it's worth, we're working on a way to indicate that news is fake. In other words, if it's a joke, you'll know it is.

For what it's worth, I'm not too familiar with the ti-news.net that's there now. I sent Chris Williams an e-mail asking for the location of the source. When he wrote back, I updated the news item linking to the Punix project page. That's my mistake for not being familiar with the ti-news site.

It's just a start mate. Though, it's pretty cool to see something like that coming. :)
