This is not a good thing...

ti-news was the main place i went for news when it was active, and the main place i could count on to advertise games until this site got somewhat popular.

RIP Ti-news...that was a good site, and the unofficial news, while it was 90% junk, did have some nice heads-ups that would be considered too insignificant on other sites.

I remember a long long time go when there were so many updates to ti-news, and then less and less, and then it switched URL's and i could never remember the new one so I visisted only once in a while.

Well, calculators are a fad, what can you expect? Thats what happens with fads. But as for great news, I'm with spiral-most of it was stuff I could care less about.

Redux-I'm curious as to how you plan to go about calcgames.org's news. Will it be like Ti News or different? Just curious.

This is sad. Though all good things must come to an end this is sad. They had great news and you could find an article on just about anything.

R.I.P. TI News

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking, calculatorfreakCG, but I'm going to try to answer. If I'm answering something completely different than what you mean to ask, let me know.

First of all, the best news editors in the community had a distinct style. Bryan Rabeler was very businesslike in his news, Nick Disabato was often more entertaining than the news he was reporting, and Tim Buckingham was a voice for the calculator enthusiasts and programmers just like you and I. In other words, I don't plan on copying anyone's style in reporting the news.

I think that there's several things a news editor has to do with the news. There's some things that just have to be reported, like when TI announces a new calculator. Also, it's the job of the news editor to feature programs that are worth mentioning for either being particularly of high quality, innovative, or just very entertaining in the case of games. This means hopefully I'll be reporting about a lot of new software. And while I was at TI-News, I wrote a column from time to time talking about issues that affect the TI community and saying what needed to be said. A news editor is probably the most visible person at any site, and if anyone's going to speak out, it's the job of the news editor.

Hopefully that at least somewhat answers your question.

Actually, it answers them all! Thanks, cause I was just wondering what calcgames.org news was going to be like. I got your "test" e-mail that was sent out.

Ah, you were also asking about the newsletter. I don't know all the specifics of that, because to be quite honest, we're still working on some if this. The test was to check if our script to mail the newsletter was working properly.

What I can say right now is it'll be a monthly newsletter and will feature (mostly) content that isn't otherwise on the site. If all we do is provide a recap of the news, a random interview, and little other content, we're wasting everyone's time with the newsletter. That won't happen here.

Some of the plan for the newsletter will be to include a featured story every month. We'll go into more detail with this story than you'll see on this site in the regular news. It won't be just reporting the news so much as focusing on an issue. There are plenty of things that are worth discussing in detail. This is not an editorial, but an attempt to report about an issue in a fair and unbiased way.

We'll also have several opportunities for readers to contribute content, including asking questions and writing letters to the editor. I'd like to see reviews of games and software be a regular part of the newsletter as well, and it's quite likely some of this content can be also provided by readers who wish to participate in this. It's likely that there will be a section on calculator tips and tricks, some of which can also be user-contributed. There will also almost certainly be an editorial or two in the newsletter, and whether or not I or someone else writes these is yet to be determined. I'd think it's more interesting if people besides me offer their opinions.

Lastly, there will certainly be a short recap of news and other information that can be found on the site. This won't be a large part of the newsletter, though.

The goal is to make the newsletter something of a magazine. Hopefully it will be above and beyond what you've come to expect from newsletters put out by calculator sites.

Again, I don't have all the details, but if you're interested, feel free to make suggestions or even send in content that you'd like to see in the newsletter. Also, if you have news that you'd like to see reported, or even a program you've written, be sure to take the time to contact me and make sure I notice it. I can't promise that I'll feature everything on the site, but if something is newsworthy, it'll be posted as soon as possible. This is one thing TI-News did right and I'd like to continue here.

And as always, you can e-mail me at redux@calcgames.org for anything mentioned above, or if you need anything else.

Hopefully that answers the questions about the newsletter and why the test was sent. None of this is final, but there's no harm in discussing it already.

Yeah, its bad that some many good calc sites close down. Ti-Fr then its successor Ti-Rex and now even Ti-News. This is very very sad if you ask me. I used to go to Ti-News a lot but it hasn't been updated for so long that I stopped going there, I guess I somewhat agree with D's saying "all good things come to an end", though I'd rephrase it as most good things comes to an end. RIP Ti-News...

Yea, I used to go there all the time, too. Then it started to get a buch of spam for a while, so I stopped going so often, then the domain name expired and then it was more of a monthly event. But it still was one of the most reliable resources for news...

So true, so ture! I kinda miss it but maybe its for everyone's good to put TI-News out of its misery, afterall a site that used to be so good and now inactive makes many disappointed. Well, I must also mention that there are close to none new sites come out and it sounds as if ti community is shrinking down to a select few again (remember 1999-2000 time?). Anyway, I hope things will get better and maybe perhaps Tim will be smart enough to have somebody else to take over his work...

Well you know I run http://calcnews.net which is basically a replacement for TI-News (and was throughout the whole time it was starting to fall apart). Think of me as the TI-Rex that stays around :D

BTW, the site just recieved major upgrades too (which is why there is old.calcnews.net and new.calcnews.net)!
And, this was not meant to be a spam post...just though people would want to know they can still get good news.

Oh, awesome! I'm glad that the site is back coz I'd miss it. Btw, tweak the background contrast just a notch, it seems a bit too bright. Maybe it's just me... Good job Jake.

Ya, the TI scene has been rather quiet still. I sure hope its not permanent.

Hopefully the new ti-news.net will bring some new ideas and offer inspiration for other programmers.

BTW, spread the news of the new ti-news.net! I emailed ticalc.org about it, yet still have not had a response.

well, speaking of TI scene it sort of reminds me of the sine wave. remember bacin in 2k, 2k1 everything was really slow on TI scene and everyone said it was dying and perhaps HP calcs would take over? that didn't quite happen and things that went bad kinda jumped back to good again. i guess we just have to wait and see.

EDIT: TI-News link is back up btw...
