I didn't want to answer some possible questions in the article, so I've decided instead to address them here.

First off all, the reason I haven't announced who's making the release is I was asked to hold off because of the Slashdotting that is likely to follow shortly after the release. The extra two or three days is to give the programmers a chance to arrange for better hosting which will be more likely to stand up to the Slashdot effect.

Concerning the potential of this being released for the TI-89 or TI-92 Plus, it's probably not going to happen. GNU/Linux pushes the (superior) hardware of the Voyage 200 to the limit already with the included utilities and a working kernel. Memory constraints are the biggest issue here, and that's why a port to other 68k calculators is out of the question.

Virtual memory is not supported on the calculator because of the speed limitations of writing to Flash ROM and concerns about Flash ROM having a limited number of writes before becoming unusable. During normal calculator operation, this does not happen. Swapping, on the other hand, would require a large number of writes to Flash ROM and is a cause for concern.

If you have any further questions, post them here and I will answer. I did receive a lengthy e-mail from the lead programmer providing me with much detail on the upcoming release, so I can certainly answer any questions you might have.

yeah, that's awesome! i'm not sure the port will have enough speed on a 68k to be useful, but this is definitely a noteworthy achievement.
either way, this is quite interesting so please keep us informed.

Hehe.. I'm fairly certain just stripping down an old kernel wouldn't work, it'd have to be from the uClinux branch to work on a calc anyway ;)(or redo everything they did on your own...)

well...people are trying to port linux to Ipods, still I couldn't tell if it was a joke or not, because it's fairly believable. I prefer Halo one :)

That was a-fools too? Man...
I actually believed that because it could be possible to port linux onto a TI, it's been done for palm and ppc (a while ago actually) so why not TI. It's true that due to calc's little ram it'd be really hard but not impossible. I'm sure it could be done at least as a OS rewrite. Though, it'll be really slow due to the processor...oh, the kernel is also 32bit so it'd take some work. Oh well...okay that one got me...

C'mon, Z. Yes it is possible, but for heaven's sake, it was April 1st; a concept I know you know. Tip: give everyone 0 credability if they have not told you something in advance.

Nobody tells me anything in advance...and umm...yeah, I guess I didn't looks at the date either. Oh well.
Wasup with dat sig D? If you're trying to make an analogy here then it isn't a good choice. Apple isn't that much better than a PC and apple computers vary just as much as pc ones. Besides, when you're comparing Porsche to Ford, what qualities you are referring to? Porsche models vary too and go from nearly crap to awesome. There are good Fords too, that just depends on the user. According to your analogy, one could say that a Ferrari is the best car in the world. I may perhaps be, but there are other cars that can be better than a Ferrari...
Okay, whatever...

I'll explain tomorrow via AIM. I will admit, most will not know what I'm talking about with that analogy.

"well...people are trying to port linux to Ipods,"

Spiral, that's gotta be pretty hard, because the SDK for ipods is not released. That's why nobody's created more games for it past Apple's breakout game. So I think you're being dupped into believing that one.

no, people are trying, regardless of the apparently (unreleased) SDK. http://ipodlinux.sourceforge.net/

It's suppose to be based off uclinux

this is a cool but rather pointless project. an mp3 player for an mp3 player? i could understand something like that being made for a palm or ppc but for the love of god, why ipod? if ipod at least had a color screen there could have been picture viewer or maybe a divx player if it has a good enough CPU but it's even more of a waste of time with its B/W lcd...

that's a cool novelty at least. though I think a knoppix. debioan-based release would work best for the ipod.

actually, UcLinux is a bit better than debian due to it being made for computers that don't have an MMU... (IOW: it's a heavily customized version of the kernel)
