Okay, I've done some snooping around but it sounds like 84+ has assembly compatibility with 83+. Patrick Davidson's post at ticalc.org said that they tried their Phoenix game and it ran fine. Of course it doesn't mean everything will run, but there's still hope. (well, this post is a short summary of a 100+ post thread at ticalc.org)

*The TI-84+/SE processor now has a clock crystal in it.

*USB means possibility of easy interface with external devices such as flash memory and maybe even a possibility of using a USB hub for multiplayer games!

*screen is the same size, 96x64

* current prices are approximately as follows: ~$120 for TI-84+, ~$130 for TI-84+ SE. looking a this i'd guess TI-89Ti may be ~$150 and force TI-89 to drop in price.

do they really have a USB plug now? If drivers could be written, that woudl completely defeat the purpose of TI keyboard.

no plans to downgrade from my 89 though, and no plans to "upgrade" my 89 to the 89ti.

yup, they now have a real USB. if i understand right, there is a mini usb jack now on top of the calculator. the calcs should also have an old 2.5mm jack to interface with older series. oh, and according to TI the usb for the calculator is going to offer big speed improvements over the regular link port (i don't yet know how much faster it'll be tho).

Ok, good, I was worried that my keyboard wounldn't work, but I figured that TI wouldn't be that stupid to have their product not work with their new calcs.

I'm still waiting for the TI-89TE...but the 84's sound nice, but it makes you wounder about the regular 83+, and the 83+SE for that matter...

Well, don't forget that TI also want the calcs linkable using the current link cables as well as compatible with older calcs such as 83 series.
btw, from what i heard 89Ti will be priced same as 89 so that would probably make no sense to buy 89 when you can get more for the money. though, i personally think that 84/89Ti look ugly and its a big design flaw to have up/down arrows conneted. to be honest, i don't like the 83+SE either. i'd rather prefer TI offer a new calc version in the orignal case but i guess that won't happen...

The new 89 will be the same price range as the regular 89? Hmm...

I didn't notice that the up/down keys are combined....but if i think about it, it woundn't make that much of a difference, but i think the new 89 looks rather overdone anyways, but I like the specs...

how would you press both up and down keys at the same time if the two buttons are combined with a plastic thingy in between them? it's not like that's such a big problem, but it could possibly make some programs not work as intended. tho, i can't think of any program where one needs to hold up/down keys to do something.

UPDATE: Actually, it seems that 84+ SE was released as well. I know that many online stores have only preorder for it, but a local Target store already has both models for sale. They both have same body, so you can only tell them apart by their color. Up and down buttons are merged into one, so you would not be able to press left and right at the same time (not like you'd need to anyway). USB port is on the top right hand side of the calc if you look at it from the front. Prices were $119.99 for the 84+ and $129.99 for the 84+ SE. On the front cover it exclaimed that these are substitutes for a TI-83+ as well as if your school requires a calc, the 84 series is fully compatible. They also show extra memory and a few other comparisons on the front of the box as well as a small window showing off the included usb cable and the extra link speed you gain with usb. On the back it has many screenshots for the various included apps, one of them is PuzzPack (kudos to detached solutions for their cool game pack). The 84+ SE seems to have a few extra app included and the ones missing from 84+ are periodic table and biology apps. The new packagings are rather flashy and not something you'd see a calc packaged in. They do look pretty good (remind me of HP-49G) but seem to be more focused for games and showoff. I'm not sure parents would be eager to buy the new model as most seem to keep their kids from playing games on the calcs but hey, we all know they'll play games anyway! In general, the new calcs look groovy so let's see how they do and what OS they have as well as backwards compatibility with 83 series. If you happen to get your hands on one of these new calcs, please drop a few lines about the new OS or if it plays 83+ games. Thanks.

My friend has an 84+ SE, so i've seen and used it in person. Three main differences between it and 83+ SE:
1) Built-in clock that shows up on bottom of mode menu
2) built-in usb jack on top [older jack is still there, too]
3) interchangable faceplates

BTW Z, you misspelled various in the article, right below the pic of the 84+.

All the 83+/SE programs are compatible with the 84, also and thebutton layout is the same.

The clock is a nice feature, but one I doubt will be used that much, the 84 is much to big to be used as a clock...

hey lunchbox, is there a chance you can look what version of OS the 84 is running? dare i ask if you upload a copy of the OS for us to test games on? from what i read so far it seems that 84 if fully compatible with the 83+ so its probably safe to add an 84 section that'd list 83+ files and later as we get files for 84 we can switch stuff around.

To allyn: well, clock would be useful for folks who like the calendar feature of the calc. games could also have dynamic settings based on the time of day as well as the use of clock for timer. i'm sure people will find the feature useful.

Uhhh...i can try and get the OS up here in the next week or so, but that's not 100%. On the TI official website, Here, there are some details about the 84+, but somewhere in there, it says something about the OS version, and I'm pretty sure it said TI-OS v2.04 is what the 84+/SE runs on. Also, the 84+/SE is compatible with external display devices. To Allyn: A clock anywhere is good. while it might not replace a watch, it is nice if you don't have a watch, to just look on your calc.

sorry about the repost Z, go ahead and delete the others

I live in Canada. On the TI hp and on other sources I have only heard that the new TI 84 will come out soon, but nobody could tell me when specifically. Do you have any infos when that calculator comes out and where I can get it?
Thanx.

Both are out already and can be picked up at your local Target store, for example. In Target you get 84+ for $120 and 84+SE for $130. Though, if you are to get one then definitely go for 84+SE. The new calcs are nearly 100% compatible with current 83+ so you should have no problems finding software. If you get one let us know how it is. :)

EDIT: Whoops, you're in Canada. I would imagine these calcs should also be available there too but if not you can go across the border to get a calc, that would be kinda extreme though.
