aight Z and other admins, my b-day was on the 7th so i've got almost $400 so we can easily switch hosts now. i think i'm gonna go ahead and sign up without registerring the domain for the new host... then when everything is running right i'll tell our current domain people to change IP's and server info stuff.

this usually takes around a week to do. so, our site could be out for a few days. and, hopefully those hosts aren't lazy and won't run into any problems like calc.org's hosts did when they were switching. anyways, lets hold on till i get finished with all our file scripts.

Will the domain name stay the same?

yeah... i have to find out how we're gonna do it.. we'll either tell our current domain people to point to the new server... or cancel it and re-register the domain with our new host so that it's syncronized time-wise so we don't have to buy a new one in the middle of the term

yes, domain name will of course remain the same. they'll only change the DNS stuff to point to a new IP they'll assign us. we won't switch for a while tho.

nice that we get to keep the domain name, it's relaly quite convenient, nice and easy to type in.

accidently posted it twice, deleted one tho.

Z, i registered with united hosting.... $80 for a year, we get 1 GB storage, 5 GB transfer per month (we can upgrade any time) and 20 mailboxes, and 20 ftp accounts (mailboxes and ftp accounts go together)

also, Z, we will have to change all of our cgi's to cope with the new thing... NO non cgi files are allowed in the cgi folder, so we have to move them somewhere else, and we'll have to change all of the links and stuff... not too much of a problem, but it'll take a while to fix.

Z, the changes are small, i've already tested converting the forum and i got it to work just fine... there aren't many cgi's to change. i even got the news script to work. all it requires is changing any paths to cgi-bin to ../html/cgi-stuff (cgi-stuff is just a folder i made up for non-cgi's that are in our current cgi folder).... anyway... if you want to check it out, go here

btw, we finally got a link from TI!!! only problem is that at this rate we'll go well over 6 gigs... so switching hosts is a must anyway... i'll have to upgrade our account at UH to 15 gigs/month or so (we'll see how much traffic we get over the next few days)... but this should turn out to be a good thing

Sounds fair enough. We might even get a whole flood of new members too.

Z, we gotta hurry and get our site running on the new host... we're gonna go over 6 GB within 10 days or so... and that might happen before december 1st... and that wouldn't be good...
