Hey guys, do you think that forum residency status would be good to have on our board? Like some boards just have different names for people's post counts, others unlock special things for frequent posters. I'd just like to hear ya out. I'd probably go with just names (like senior resident for a few hundred posts, cg noobie for under 5, etc.). In that case, name contribution is welcome (don't forget to mention post count for your name).

It's a pity we can't weight post quality against quantity, bu tanyways, residency based on quantity is good (quality would be better, but unworkable)

I think that would be great!!!! On all the other boards, there is always alot of bad posts, and I think you guys could probably tweak some peoples a bit if you think they don't deserve it, right?

Wow! My post count right now is 911 . . kind of freaky. What would be the status levels anyways?

That's the thing, Z asked for a little help with tthe status names if we went for this idea.
First off, it Mostly depends how many levels you think we'll need.

No, because then people would post to get a post counted. It would encourage posts like this, "I can't help you there" or "Good job."

IF the idea would work, there would have to be people who review the person's post quailty. Since i don't see that happoning anytime soon, the idea woun't work.

Come on allyn, everyone posts things like that from time to time. I know it would encourage things like that, but, if that happens then zkostik, or another admin can step in.

How about these status levels?

1. Newbie/Noob 10 posts or lower posts
2. Junior Memeber 11-50 posts
3. Contirbutor 51-100 posts
4. Forum Regular 100-200 posts
5. Senior Member 201-320 posts
6. Forum Master 321-450 posts
7. Forum Whiz 450-700 posts
8. Forum Geek 701-1000 posts
9. Old Time Poster 1000+ posts

I like the Old Time Poster for the last one. The other ones are okay. But you see, it gets harder and harder as the levels go up, that way it discourages posting "junk".

I don't post unless I have something to say, maybe thats why i'm only in the 250 post range...and i've been around for 8 months. freak, Just a little while ago you posted something like "wow, thats alot of programs." See, that has no reason...IMO

the levels will only encouirage discrimination against the low posters, how can the admin help? Look at every forum and delate every extraerous post? Really? come on here, most of us have alot more important things to do...

I'm against any Forum Resenidency status based only on post count.

I agree with allyn. Posting for the sake for boosting post count with 1-line posts isn't representative of seniority.

Of course, but everyone posts things like, "Great!" I do, you do, zkostik does, digital does, BullFrog does, Barret does, Momen does, Billy does . . .I could go on forever! It doesn't dicremenate, I know a new user when I see one. Like, TiFreak, I instantly didn't like becuase Tifreak stole my "name" (The freak part at least), Not becuase he was new. Momen posted enough to be consider, In my opion, a regular poster. We know who's a newbie, basically, it just gives the higher forum users a little pride. Thats all. In my opion, your a regular user.

Thats just a suggestion . . . you can modify the above status ideas.

Sprial: Of course it isn't. But, why not make newsbie 30 posts or lower? That works.

Well, I'll stay with just names. Having different status could produce junk posts and besides, there aren't any special features to make unlockable anyway. Quality based posts don't work very well as seen from calc.org and would just make some people mad, not to mention our 8300+ posts w/t any rating. Quality based system is hardly possible and honestly I don't think its worth all the efforts and time.
So yes, come up with around 20-30 names for different post counts and I'll add that into the system. We could throw a small emoticon or another pic along with names as well. I like a good variety of names and it'll just make it more fun. Some wacky weird names would also be cool as long as they're not offensive and don't violate our content policy.

Oh yes, speaking of quality posts like calcfreak mentioned. This is a community forum, its here for fun and info or just a place to hang out. Of course we all post junk posts from time to time, I'm just saying that overall quality of the forum should be maintained so that forums looks good and its members are happy and don't think that they wasted their time here. I don't want our board to be like ticalc.org's where they delete all comments that they think are junk, though with their insane number of posts and visits I can pretty much understand why they're doing that (Yes, I remember what their boards used to look like and that's one of the reasons I stopped going there regularly and started my own site. I've been in ti community for about 5 years now and I've seen quite many ups and downs.).

I know a site with some great split up on names, but I'll have to post them later. Besides that, I think that this is a great idea Z. In reguards to posts, I know of a bug that I'll e-mail you tomorrow since I have to finish up here soon.

I know a quality system just doesn't work, it's a waste of time to review every person's post.

I agree with you about people posting on ticalc. Most of the time with 100+ comments by the time I first saw the news, I considered a waste of time to read them. One of the times I did read about it though, I heard about SAS :) which was suppose to "blow phoenix and all other space shooters away" (paraphrased).

I know the idea behind a quality post review, but like Spiral said; it just won't happen. It's too much effort to review and read all the posts on the board.
The far extreme resulting from a ranking system would be to make this board become like ticalc.org's with a bunch of garbage 2 word or less posts including "I agee" or "+1!" or "First reply!" and the like. However, I douubt that will happen. There really aren't that many users so its not likely to happen. This board is more of what Z says, a closer kind of community. So I think it's out of scope to thing something to that extreme would occur from a ranking system.
However, I know the boards can drastically chage. Such as when TI added CG to their site. We had all sorts of new people posting the same topics over and over (which they could have figured out themselves in 2 seconds). Drove me nuts. But that fluxuated away, and it is pretty much the same way it was before again.

BTW, why do I have so much blank space at the top and bottom of my posts? I'm not doing it on purpose, and I can't get rid of it! :(

Oh, I see.

Anyways, I think that if we don't get the status, then that makes me feel a little more off guard, cause I post things all the time on the member forums like recently, "the graphics in that screenshot were awesome! How long did they take to make?" That way,I don't feel bad about it.

I have another proposal, instead of status names, ho about just a little display of that person's post count? Not just in the profile, but on the posts too?

But the question is...Who actually cares how many posts you have? I think we can pretty much figure out who to listen too...

I don't know really allny, but then you could ask, who really cares about forum residency status? IMHO, I think it's just a little pride booster for us forum regulars.
