Now, I know that the issue about people creating an account and wasting user names was brought up in another topic, but I think that I may have found a some what logical, easy, and useful solution. In the Usage agreement/new account screen, maybe there should be something about only creating an account if you plan to use the forums, or at least mentioning that you don't need to be a member to download the files. What think?

Yeah, but people don't read that stuff as we know it. While it would generally be nice if they did and used the side resources but some folks only want to review files or rate stuff for instance. Some just register, well just to register. Others will register to ask one question or never have time to post anything, whatever... With the volume of new folks we get it'd be very difficult to try to monitor all the users and I honestly don't think the effort and time is worth it. We may eventually come up with some kind of reporting system so we know the trends and all, but I'm not sure we'll really will keep userbase clean. This is much like free email addresses, people often just get them for god knows what reasons they may have.

Perhaps if you have some more specific monitoring and cleaning suggestins in mind, we'll gladly hear you out, maybe you have some idea we didn't think of and it'll be useful for all of us. Please speak out if you have something.

Maybe there could be some sort of limited-time account, i.e. one that lets you review files, but either doesn't need a username or dies after a month or so? Though, I realize that this would probably be really hard to do, as it would require some remodeling in the very least. Anyway, I'll try to come up with something... [thinking]
