I know there is a infred wireless chat but we need to have a wireless chat with an antenna like one you can put in your bookbag so the teachers can't see I think that would be cool. I would not know how to do it but if anyone has any ideas halla calcman05@yahoo.com

wish i did, man, that would be pretty sick. I might be able to splice the wires right and hook up a cheap antenna, but it'd take me a while and i'd need someone to do thee translation software to and from the antenna. Otherwise, it would be just like a walkie talkie, although you'd probably need a frequency adjuster in the event that someone else is on thee same wavelength as you and is interrupting with your transmissions.

If search ticalc or google you'll find a few schematics on how to build one yourself. You'll also be able to find a few programs that work with wireless on calc. Though, parts for the device will run you about $40 or so plus you'll have to put it all together. Though, it shouldn't be too hard if you use one of these boards where you can just insert IC's and don't need to solder anything...

will it work all the way across school, like say 200 meters?

Are you kidding? If you build the rf one, depending on the model and specs you can probably get 50-100m or so. Maybe with a good amp you could get 200m but not likely w/t any bulky antennaes and such.

I would be interested in some type of chat module that would work with the TI-Calculators. I convinced a few of my friends to go and buy some (and they did) and a type of chat-software would be great. If I can find a way to get my hands on anything that I could use to communicate to another TI wireless, than I would write a program to work with it. If its not to difficult, I think I'll try to build a pair of IR devices for the ticalcs. As long as I can get at least 15 meters, I'm fine.

Well, to program for any wireless device that hooks up to a calc you'll need to know assembly. Second, each device would probably operate differently at least as far a link code is concerned. Anyway, only group I know is currently working on a project like that is Cemetech, you can see what they've got so far, however, their project is quite far from even working... There's also another guy who's working on a chat program and a wireless IR device and you can see it here (it's in french tho): http://yoshiyo.ath.cx/seb/. You can also see Sami Khawam's IR link here: http://sami.ticalc.org/irlink/. He's not working on it anymore tho. Anyway, choosing either of these links will still require you to build one yourself so it won't be an easy project.

EDIT: Btw, nice DX avatar. DX is one of my favorite games (first one of course and it's obviously a pc version not that PS2 joke). I beat that game probably like 5 times of which three times were on max difficulty to get all the fun and to see all 3 endings although you don't really have to play through the whole game to see the 3 different endings... Yay, I think I'll install it back and play it once again (if I actually have time to play it :)).

Hehe thanks for the links. I checked out one of them. I'll look at the others as well.

(Yay, a DX fan. I NEVER would play the PS version. It's horrible, from what I heard. I got DX1 on a DVD (game of the year edition) and I beat it quite a few times. I like it's flexibility to work on almost any computer, with minimum requirements.)

Ya, the programming part scares me, but I'm sure its been done. My dad made a similiar device for a pda for his college project, so he has the experience to help out. And he's an engineer at Intel, so I can get parts/help from him to build the thing. (as I am still a sophomore at high-school)

saying the antenna is to bulky... We all carry bookbags so we could sit t the antenna in our book bags... the only problem with ir is that you can't go through walls you have to direct connect...

I'm sure you could program an auto-detect function into the cacl-antenna communication software, you'd just need to have each calc give out a unique signal, like their model # or something. i'd definetly be willing to make the hardware if someone could do the software. I'm not too big on assembly, myself.

Well, I guess it depends on an antenna. Ever seen one of 20dba pipe looking antennaes for wifi? Those things are pretty large but they give you like 12mi range, if you're really one of these people who like extreme things. As with IR modules, these are pretty easy to build, only annoying thing is go collect parts. RadioShack is quite expensive so one of my coworkers recommended me this place: www.allelectronics.com. These guys have really nice prices, if you need something in bulks packs you'll get discounts. They also sell some used parts so you can get certain things for even less. Only thing is that some IR modules require a PIC chip and you'll have to buy a programmer for it which will probably run you somewhere around $30-50. Anyway, make sure to let us know if you start building one. I'd (and probably others) will be interested to see the outcome.

I have discussed this with my dad, and I have decided to start gathering parts over the next weekend, and possibly have it done in a month or two. I have some other things to do in the meantime, but I am very interested in making one. My dad suggested a different processor than PIC, because he has a programmer for a more advanced one. He said that the PIC is good for simple things, but hard to work with when performing complex programs. I'll use Sami's schematic to build the module. Most of these parts are lying around the house, except the power modulator, processor, oscillator...

But it shouldn't be too hard. I want to experiment with the TI link protocol before it, so I'll try working with sound and figuring out how the link exactly works. I'll keep you posted.

You'd think that would be a lot simpler than bodging a radio device to a calculator's link port, wouldn't you.

Thanks for the site Z. As soon as I get a recess in my schoolwork, I'm gonna try and build the actual antenna (2 of them, of course). anyone tha has commeents or suggeestions, please tell me via post or e-mail.

Cool, it's going to be interesting to see what you guys come up with. While they shouldn't be too hard, they still are a challenge so we'll see how everything turns out. Good luck on these projects.

I found a site for a wireless chat device called irlink. You can use it to chat between calcs and play 2-player games. The URL is http://sami.ticalc.org/irlink/e_intro.htm . The site includes a description of the device, photos, and how to build one. You will also need to download a couple programs to your calc for this to work. It doesn't look like it would be too hard to add an antenna, either.

Thanks for the link wnh11, but I've already posted a link to that site in one of my long comments above so no wonder you missed it. But yeah, Sami's IRlink is probably the most well known irlink device around although not used that much. You will not be able to add an antenna to this unit because it uses infrared light as means of communication. If it was rf (radio frequency) then you could stick a bigger antenna onto the device to give you some boost but you'd still need to modify the circuit to output a more powerful signal to really make a difference. If you look at one of my comments above there's a link to one of the RFlinks, it may be of interest to you.

I was out snowboarding this weekend and am now finishing my homewwwork, so i haven't had time yet, but in 3 weekends i will (I have driving school for the next 2 weekends, which runs from 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. both saturday and sunday :sunglasses2: ). Then I'll start figuring out everything.

BTW Z, nice new avatar.

NDS would not work very well as a chat tool in school, well it might if you can carefully hide it. Tho, $150 just for chat is a bit of an overkill and uhm...your friend would need to have one too. But generally speaking, NDS would server well for chat and stuff. You could also send scribbles from its touchpad which can be a good addon.
