Ok, there have been several complaints that the forum is different. I am not going to deny these charges; it's true. The new forums are different.

Now, if there are things that you actually don't like, please tell us here in this topic. The forums are NOT finished yet. One thing I have learned is that if you want to get something done, upload what you have done and let people use it - then they will pressure you to fix it/finish it/make it better. For now it works well enough so that it is now the official forum.

Thank you.

These are, by far, the worst forums I have used.

From the standpoint that...

a) Old usernames and bios and stuff seem to be missing
b) Where are signatures?
c) Navigation is hard to comprehend
d) Old posts and topics did not transfer, history seems to be missing
e) The forum frontpage looks far too cluttered and hard to read, makes it look too "busy" for it's own good
f) The whole "profile" thing looks to be [ and I am sure it is ] based on the imcommunity or whatever that crap is, not for forums
g) Rushed into the spotlight in what seems to be a pre-pre-precompleted state
h) Once again, the board seems designed to make it hard to accomadate the user
i) There's a length limit for posts??
j) At the moment, it does not match the site in my opinion, the colors yes, but that is a setting you have to activate, or at least I did

Now that I think about it, no Edit, Delete, Quote, or buttons like that, and the difference between dark grey and black is to small for the "read" and "unread". You should have it bolded or something if you are going to keep it like this

I have to click the "Mark forum as read" link to mark any topic as read, it should mark itself if I have read it

I agree are some of those are legitimate concerns, and I can assure you we will review those suggestions (and any others that are mentioned) and work to implement as many of them as possible. We do appreciate your feedback, and your comments do make a difference.

Thanks!

I didn't have to activate the colors.

Also, how is it hard to navigate? It's point and click.

well the only things I have to say are that every thing seems like it is too big so it fills up the screen and is hard to read because it wraps to fit the screen. Also the name and avatar section seems to mix with the comment space maby a small vertical separator just so it is easier on your eyes. And I noticed the emotions don't work(minor detail).

Thats my two cents. Thanks guys.

While I'm all for this new forum, it has some things that NEED to be addressed in the near future, or not many of the millions of users that flood in at the beginning of the school year will stay. In addition to XX's list:
1. If topic has not yet been replied to, it leaves out the date on which it was posted.
2. When my avatar is displayed next to my posts, its height:width ratio is kinda off.
3. After mousing over the list of online users, there's no tooltip showing how many seconds they've been there.
4. What happened to my forum!? I'm working on my projects every day!
5. It would be useful if as many forum guidelines/rules would be automated as possible. For example, topics could automatically lock after reaching 50 posts.

I agree that finding active topics here can be compared to navigating Moria...

I like how it fits the FAQ page's look and feel...

6. It's possible to type in a post without being logged in. Only after clicking "Submit" does it let you know that, in fact, you weren't logged in.
7. The current setup encourages for only one active topic in each forum.

8. There's no segregation based on calc model or programming language. It's always annoying to ask the problem-haver which calculator is being used.
9. Everyone's forced to use the same time zone.
10. CalcGames should create or adopt programming tutorials for pertinent languages. Ray Kremer's tutorials are not only severely outdated, but lack CalcGames' color scheme.

Sorry about your forum not being there, havecalc... when i started creating the user forums i posted nearly all of them, then towards the end i started only creating the ones with replies within the past few months.

It's there now.

As far as the bar separating user info section and the comment, i was actually trying to do that a few weeks ago but ran into some trouble... that's something that I definitely agree on.

And the imPolls have a bug that I am unable to fix from this particular internet center... If Nikky wants to fix it that would be great. (in jv.cgi, it tries to get the IP address but the way the front-end file manager does things, it just inserted my IP address without quotes... so it inserts some weird random text in the IP address database)... it should read ENV{something like that...

Updates done as of yet:

-Signatures (some suggestions as to the position/separation would be nice)
-Increased comment limit to 16kB
-Fixed imPoll.net (thanks, Nikky)
-Removed the Spanish Board (for now)
-Added the line of separation

Ok, now read topics are specific... but please, for now, use "mark this forum as read" as often as possible... that way it will cut down on disk usage as well as page load times (in the future when there are more topics, especially).

Thanks, MADMAN...

I'm just a bit worried that some people will come in in the future and just read topics without ever marking the first few hundred topics as read... then after a while they'll have tons of topics read, and it won't be able to have a "starting point" for the specific forums to cut down on disk usage... Would anyone complain if topics that are inactive for more than a specific amount of time are automatically marked as read? it could be 6 months, a year... even 2 years... but more than 2 years could cause a lot of problems.

Why not just create a "bump" function? That way, a topic will stay active as long as people are interested. Without restricting such a power's usage to mods, though, I see how it quickly get out of hand...

I'll make it 6 months (unless anyone thinks it should be longer)... that's short enough to keep the topic list somewhat short (under a few hundred topics).

Don't most forums use Javascript + cookies or that sort of thing to mark topics as read?

No, most forums store the which posts are unread on the server. That way if they read it from a different computer, it still says the correct things.

All the main forums need to be on one page man, having them on different pages makes it _very_ awkward to browse through them, seeing how there is no set navigation. It's still very clumsy to navigate the forums here

Not sure if this one's been covered yet, but the portion at the top saying how to log in (Welcome to forums, blah blah blah, click here to log in) does NOT change when logged in. It still says to click to log in.

Oh, and PMs did not transfer. This irks me.

My old account (JcCorp) doesn't work-- maybe because I reused an email or something...

There needs to be breaks between posts! They look so cluttered!

The signatures don't go to the bottom of the post and I think there should be a divider so that it doesn't look like the poster says some randome comment at the end of all of their posts.

I take that back. It goes to the design.calcgames.org forum page. The top nav bar is there that directs you to the different parts of the site.

EDIT: Just now saw the edit button. Sorry for the double post.

I had a link to the OLD forum that i went to to get straight to the forum without having to put up with iFrames and accidentally went to the CG main site and saw we had new forums so i changed my link. Unfortunately EVERYTHING i had on the old site - Pm, Sig, Avatar and more - are Gone! i don't have to old forum link any more so i cant go and retrieve it. I liked the old forum better... The main page is WAY to cluttered and i really want my "Active Topics" back. I can't look at the main page because it has too much info on it to be helpful. Sorry for ranting but CDI is right this is a in a "pre-pre-precompleted state" and if it's not (if you think this is perfect/finished) then... well anyways...

I kinda think there should still be post counts for users. Not only would it be easier for newer users to distinguish between experienced people and not-such, but there would be greater motivation for lotsa posting.

I personally dislike showing post counts in the topic page itself, just because people shouldn't be judged solely upon that; what I would support is a level system that is based on the number of posts (with perhaps the ability for administrators to adjust their level up or down accordingly to the ability and actions they exhibit on the board).

I really don't have much of a problem showing it on their profile page, however.

Yeah, that system would be more accurate and effective. Such a system shouldn't be too meaningful, or hostilities would erupt, I imagine.

I agree, but I also think that the status of a user needs to be on their profile page. EX: User, Moderator, Admin. That type of stuff.
I know when I first came to CG I tried to figure out who was important and who was just another person.

Just throwing my 2 cents in.

I completely disagree with your process of judgment. Not only can moderators be calculatorially inept, but the common man is plenty capable of masterliness (like me!).

Also, I just realized (though it's probably already been thought of): The <<faq>> ain'ted work.

What? You didn't do anything wrong. To be clearer in what I meant, I only intended to address a statement I saw as incorrect, hopefully in a way that didn't sound angry. I can't imagine how turmoilish my life would be if little things like that offended me...

Where are you at in BASIC these days, anyway? :)

I think that the old idea of being able to reply to individual mesages should be returned. For an example, look at the bumped-back Sept. '04 news page. If that's in effect now, but just in news, it should be expanded to more areas. Not everywhere, though.

By the way, like my sig? It really is a true story, you know. Seriously. It was some kind of promotion by the tampon company.

Yes, I also agree that it's a cool feature, but it's only cool if used correctly. It wouldn't be the greatest idea to use a threaded discussion system in, for example, a help forum... that just wouldn't work. I am open for suggestions, though. We can also always open more forums for different purposes.

that's HTML's way of displaying things. If I want it to not do that, I'd have to replace all spaces with &nbsp;

Which would be a complete waste of space. If I ever make a <code> tag, it will replace spaces with &nbsp;

There's no way to tell that someone's edited a post without first clicking on the topic (the date of postage, as well as the boolean state of unreadedness, changes not with editship).
